Fun things to do with Google Search

Google is the household name for getting things done and questions answered. We associate the search giant with research papers, trivia and how-to’s, but we don’t always remember the fun quirky side of Google.  Built into the site is a growing list of games, tricks and features designed to wow and entertain users with a bit of free time on their hands. I’d suggest you go make yourself a cup of coffee, before playing around with our list:

Atari breakout – the ultimate time killer!
Image search the words “Atari Breakout”, and enjoy playing this classic game. Each level uses a new set of images you need to break out from. Highly addictive, and very entertaining.

Pacman,
Speaking of classic, pass the time by playing Pacman. The 2010 Google Doodle doubles up as a link to the fun and timeless game. Simply google Pacman, and opt to play, it’s that simple!

The Bacon number,
This trick is based on the theory that between any two people on the earth there exist a link of 6 people. Using this knowledge, Google has created an algorithm to determine the most efficient link between Kevin Bacon and any of our Hollywood favourites, this is called the Bacon number. Finding someone with a high bacon number is now the new challenge, and by the time this blog went online, I could only find someone with a bacon number of 2, which is kind of low, so if you find someone with a higher score (no cheating) comment below!

The Multi-lingual search engine,
Google offers search results in more than 123 languages, but did you know you can search in Pirate, Klingon and Hacker?

The Force is with you
If like me, you are not a Trekkie and prefer the Wars, you can use this nifty YouTube trick to send your search results into flux by typing “Use the force Luke” into the search bar, try it!

The no internet relief
Bored with no internet available, search something on google, and double tap on your screen when you see the grey dinosaur page and enjoy your off-line game!

Searching for more
You can also use the search box for some cool tricks and even Harry Potter-like magic. Type in ‘Silencio” to mute your browsers, or “Lumos” for some light (you need to use your phone for this one). If the HP fandom isn’t really your thing, try going old school by typing  “Sonic the Hedgehog”, “askew”, <blink> or “do a barrel roll” for some light entertainment.

There are so many easter eggs hidden in Google, we can’t possibly list them all, and why would we – the joy is in finding them yourselves! If you find one, drop us a clue in the comment section.

7 Benefits of SEO

Google has become a household name and a verb, no one searches anything on the internet, they Google it. I recently said to someone they should Google a DIY video on YouTube, and they didn’t correct my sentence. If Google = Search, does SEO = answers? With Google and search being synonymous you can’t afford not to embrace the search giant, and up your SEO game. Here are my top 7 reasons why I know you need SEO!

      1.  The right clients are already looking for you

93% of web-based activities start with a search engine. With over 40 000 searches per second, your business is certainly the answer to some of them, you just need to give out the right signal!

      2.  Leverage the best conversion rates

Search traffic has the best conversion rate of all online traffic. Use it to your advantages. When consumers click on search results more than 50% of their buying decision has already been made, they just need to choose you as their outlet.

       3.  24/7 visibility

Google does not sleep, and neither does SEO. Your ranking doesn’t change overnight, or while you are at an event. By ranking high in search results, your business is being promoted while you sleep!

       4.  Building trust – one result at a time

Many customers use their online research to make their purchase decision. By informing and advising them on best practices or ideas for using your product/services you are building their trust in you brand’s expertise.

        5.  It’s time to measure up

You can measure and track your SEO conversions. You can also track your website’s ranking and organic traffic. This means you can easily identify the right keywords to add value to your business.

        6.  You need to keep up with the Jones

Your competitors are most likely already findable online, you need to outrank them. With new businesses popping up daily, you need to be nr1 on Google’s list, to ensure clients choose you first!

         7.  Get the low hanging fruit

Once you have optimized your website, you can start targeting new keywords to expand into other easy to access markets. Using keywords for new services or offerings, search engines will drive quality traffic to your page, giving you access to a new market!

There are so many more reasons for you to invest in SEO, keep an eye out for my next post, or sign up to our newsletter so you don’t miss anything!

It should be you they are looking for.

If you could choose any house in your dream suburb would you settle for something less than the top 10? Me neither! Think about it. When was the last time you clicked past the first page of your search results (and honestly was it just out of boredom?). Everyone wants the top 10, they don’t even think about the rest. And why should they? This is exactly why search ranking matters so much, no one will give your page a first (never mind second) glance if it’s not on page one.

You can say that thousands of people are searching for services similar to yours right this second. Will they be able to find you? Customers don’t like to play hide and seek online. Without you noticing you might be steering your potential customers into your competitors’ arms because it is just too difficult to find you.

According to a recent analysis done by Chitita Insights, 33% of Google’s organic traffic goes to the first ranking organic search result, 18% to the second position and it gets less the further down the list you are. In this hyper-competitive arena, can you afford not to be seen or found?

That’s right, you can’t, none of us can. BUT we/Born Intelligence can fix it!

Website findability is categorized into 2 groups – external (on which I will be focusing) and on-site findability (that we can sort out when we’re designing your site).  External findability is often confused with the term “searchability”, but it’s not the same thing. Just because someone can search for something doesn’t necessarily mean they will be able to find it.  Findability, in short, means how easily can your site be found via an organic search. It also measures how easy it is to find specific content on your page.

You want to improve your website’s findability so your customers (who consist of a specific demographic, with certain needs) can easily find you, and the products you offer. To optimize your page’s findability, you need to evaluate a few elements on your site, these are just a few:

  • User interface design – The difference between walking around a park, and walking through it. The user will still get to his destination, but the one experience will be much greater than the other one.
  • Accessibility– Making sure people of all abilities and disabilities can access, navigate and use your website with ease.
  •  SEO – search engines are tasked with bringing answers to questions, or solutions for problems, SEO is all about notifying the search engine that you are the answer/solution
  • Information architecture – describes how your website’s content is labelled, structured and organized so everything relates to everything else.

When implemented right, these elements can help your website stand out from the rest, and be recognized for the unique value propositions you hold.

Capitalising on Black Friday

Knowing why your customers acts a certain ways, gives you the opportunity to cater/market to their behaviour. Comment below and tell us which of these tricks are you using this #BlackFriday?

Black Friday success – more than just a discount

I always assumed Black Friday was only a hit due to the insane discounts stores offer on the day. This is in fact not true at all! There are various (mostly psychological) factors playing a role, and pushing customers to spend, spend, spend! Here’s a list of the top 5 reasons (other than price discounts) people go crazy for Black Friday deals.

1. Sleep deprivation: Many sales start as early as 00:01 in the morning, customers either have to wait in line, or set an alarm for the online sale. Limited sleep causes reduced cognitive behaviour which impairs decision making, leading to more impulse buys.

2. Reward of the bargain: “Any time people shop and they find a great deal, there’s that psychological joy of pleasure,” says consumer scientist James Mourey. Customers tend to regard price reduction as a reward – they gain something for doing nothing. This activates the brain’s reward centre.

3. Playing hard to get: The economic scarcity principle says that “the more restricted an opportunity is, the more desirable it becomes”. We see this principle in dating and we see it during Black Friday. Retailers create scarcity by using words such “limited”, “first 100” , “quick” etc. This make consumers desire the product more, even though on a logical level they know they should be able to get that item at a comparable price in the near future.

4. Social Proof: As pack animals, humans believe that “if other people are doing something, we use that as evidence that it must be good.” By asking customers to RSVP for an event online, or getting them to que in front of your store, you are creating proof that your sale is better and more “worth it” than the next sale. If everyone is out bargain hunting on Black Friday, it implies that you should also be doing so.

5. The build-up: Retailers leak information regarding their Black Friday sales long before consumers even begin to think about their Black Friday shopping. Why? To build anticipation! By slowly releasing information retailers create excitement, anticipation and ultimately consumers want these items more by the time it comes on sale.

Which of these methods did you use during your Black Friday campaign? Did I miss any other important strategies? Let me know in the comment section!

Creative juices

Do you ever struggle to get your creative juices flowing? Don’t we all do sometimes? Well we value a good breakfast with some fresh blue berries. Berries help maintain communication between brain cells and help activate the factor brain derived neurotrophic factor. This helps with survival, growth and differentiation of new neurons, which is needed when it comes to creative thinking.

A fun fact whilst talking about creativity, do you remember when Tony Stark offered Dr. Banner some blueberries in the LAB whilst problem solving on set of Avengers? Coincidence, we think not, but Robert did keep food hidden all over the set when shooting Avengers in 2012. The blueberries that Tony offered Banner was not scripted, just a creative way for Stark to eat on set.

Why not try some recipes to improve your creativity? Start your day with a Blueberry and Yogurt breakfast or comment with your favourite recipes.

Sandton City becomes an overnight virtuoso in celebration and promotion of the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival 2017

Scaling stairs has never been more fun, or melodic! To promote the 20th Standard Bank Joy of Jazz festival, Born Intelligence, in partnership with Booming Media developed a musical stairway activation aimed at transporting visitors in a symphony of sounds to the next level of the Checkers courtyard in the Sandton Convention Centre.

The Joy of Jazz festival is South Africa’s oldest jazz festival and this year they are celebrating 20 years of entertaining the nation. With 30 performances over three days on four stages Standard Bank wanted to give prospective visitors an immersive and musical taste of what they could expect from the festival.

Imagine the surprised reactions shoppers had when they suddenly hear music coming from below their feet as they are walking up a staircase!

By attaching sensors to lightweight boards on each stair, Born Intelligence was able to mimic various tones when people stepped on each stair. This interactive interface quickly engaged passer-byes, prompting them to walk up and down the stairs, sometimes running or even jumping to try and play different songs!

Strauss Bornman, our head developer designed and installed this musical activation overnight with the support of Booming Media Hotshots who created the ‘body’ of the piano. We invite all clients to go and visit these magical stairs, and don’t forget to share your songs with us!

LDR linking domain relevance

Linking Domain Relevance (LDR)

The former member of Google’s Webspam team made the statement that “getting a link from a high PR page used to always be valuable, today it’s more the relevance of the site’s theme in regards to yours, relevancy is the new PR”.

This basically means that Google is putting less weight on authority signals like PageRank and more emphasis on Linking Domain Relevancy (LDR). LDR simply put is a question whether the sites that links to yours is in a similar niche?

Let’s explain this with an example, say for instance you have a site about clothing. It makes sense that an equitable amount of your links would be made up of links from sites about clothing outlets and accessories.

Naturally, you will have some links from unrelated sites and a few links from “general” sites. General sites include directories and news sites. Notably, the main point is that a clothing site with natural links will have links from other clothing sites.

Google frowns upon sites that have a bunch of unrelated links, therefore it is necessary for you to build a link profile that is related to you. Furthermore, most link profiles are littered with irrelevant links, the link anchor text may be relevant, however all the links are from off-topic domains.

So you might ask what can I do to build a relevant link-profile? Make sure that at least 30% of your links are niche-relevant. The links don’t have to be in the exact same niche, but should somehow have the same LDR.
